Hello and welcome to the Collected Edition – a comic book podcast where we explore celebrated story-arcs from comics and creators throughout the entirety of history.

Today on the program we are discussing Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil – the 2007 4 issue reinterpretation of Captain Marvel by Jeff Smith of Bone fame. This is a intriguing and different take on the origin story of Shazam (or Captain Marvel) as imagined by Jeff Smith. Using his unique style Smith hits all the usual story beats you’d expect in a Shazam story but with a few different twists and a bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure. It’s everything you expect just not in the way you expect it.

Also on the program we discuss the new logo for Detective Comics that will appear on that comic’s 1001th issue. One of us likes it, one does not really care…which is which? Find out!

In addition we talk about the graphic novel adaptation of Pete Townsend’s grandiose project Lifehouse will be published by Heavy metal magazine in 2020. If you don’t know about Lifehouse – it’s a really strange thing that probably works really well if you’re on mind altering substances and one of us is really excited and one is not…which is which? Find out!

And finally we also discuss the rather controversial ideas of Dave Sim of Cerebus fame and should we admire the art and not the artist and is that even possible?

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.
