Today on the program we talk about the classic, brilliant, iconic, beautiful, glorious, and wonderful comic BONE. We like this one, can you tell? This is a comic that is a vaudevillian comedy, a Disneyesque cartoon, and an epic fantasy all at once. Jeff Smith created something special here. Also, Brian gets way too excited about a cow race.

In addition, we talk about some of the great creators that have passed recently.

As always, thanks for listening.

In this episode, we discuss The Spectre: Crimes and Judgments by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake from 1992. This is a gritty, noir, horror thriller with 90s excess…we have opinions. This is a story full of contradictions, missed opportunities, and confused messages. It is a story trying to be progressive and poignant but ends up getting lost in its attempt to be controversial and gritty. This is a sin committed by many comics in the 90s. But the question is…is that sin to be punished or forgiven?

Also, we discuss the pros and cons of having a Netflix subscription.

As always, thanks for listening.

Today on the program we discuss the absolute gloriousness that is the Marvel/DC crossover epic JLA Avengers written by Kurt Busiek, and art by the mighty George Pérez. It is a bonanza of comic book wonder, a masterclass by Pérez, and a pretty good story overall. You want easter eggs? This comic has you covered.

In addition, we talk about George Pérez and what he means to comics and to us.

Today on the program we discuss the flagship title that launched Valiant ComicsMagnus Robot Fighter. This is the story of a man named Magnus …that fights robots …in a mini-skirt …which to be fair was the style at the time. Written by Jim Shooter with art by Art Nichols this is a surprisingly complex comic that deals with politics, and poverty, and even touches on gender identity, and all this coming from Jim Shooter who was not known for being – sensitive – in those areas.

In addition, we talk about the complicated legacy of Jim Shooter. A giant in the industry for sure, but also a controversial one as well.

Today on the program we wade into the infamous end of the pool. Beauty and the Beast by Ann Nocenti and “art” by Don Perlin. It tells the story of the love affair between Hank Mccoy’s Beast and – the disco-inspired mutant Dazzler.  Is it good? Well, no. But does it have redeeming qualities? Maybe. It does have excellent covers by Bill Sienkiewicz, so that’s something.

Also, we briefly discuss the failed 70s/80s disco extravaganza Dazzler the Movie that would have been – if it had been actually made – simultaneously the worst and greatest movie in history.

Thanks again for listening.

Today on the program we discuss The Black Monday Murders by Johnathan Hickman and Tom Coker – which should be a breeze. It’s…complicated. We have an interesting time trying to explain what is actually happening. Because the Black Monday Murders can be a bit daunting for first-time readers of Hickman’s work. And the sheer wealth of information being presented to you can be overwhelming. But the story being told is rich, its world-building extensive, and with a little patience and persistence, it will reap rewards in the long term.  And it does bring up some interesting topics for discussion as well.

Also, we talk about Image employees unionizing. Hooray!

Today on the program we discuss the classic run on Starman written by James Robinson and art by Tony Harris. This is a beloved run on the character (and deservedly so) with lots of phallic imagery. Also, Paul and Brian have differing ideas on the true nature of Jack Knight – is he a jerk or just misunderstood? Disagreements abound!

This also serves as our 2021 end-of-year episode where we give our picks for our top 5 best comics of the year.

A personal note from Paul: Thank you to everyone who has continued to be supportive and patient in what turned out to be a very haphazard and difficult year for me personally. And here’s to a new year of what I hope will be just plain normality. Happy New Year and I hope you enjoy this episode and stick with us for some exciting things being planned for 2022.

This time we talk about the grand epic, neo-noir detective comic about hybrid animal-human people, Elephanmen: Wounded Animals written by Richard Starkings and drawn beautifully by Moritat. Set in a world post-pandemic (yikes) this story deals with some pretty deep and disturbing issues while telling compelling, if somewhat fragmented, tales of a bizarre yet somehow relatable future.

In addition, we talk about the “new” series Sweet Tooth and Loki.

How bonkers? Well, Godzilla fights monsters, sure that’s a given, but he also tangles with cattle rustlers, a New York sewer rat, and goes to space. Seriously, Godzilla goes to space. The 1970s were weird.

In addition, we ramble on far too long about old adverts in comics. So if you like to hear two old guys talk about things “back in my day” you’re in luck!

Thanks for listening.

Today on the program we will be discussing Invincible – the inspirational story of a plucky bartender that gets to live his dream of playing football for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Oh wait, that’s not right. We will of course be talking about the comic book Invincible written by Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley.

But before that – as is typical for this show – we will discuss a subject we know little to nothing about. In this case, it’s non-fungible tokens and cryptocurrency. But that dovetails nicely into a discussion about who owns the art that creators make and who gets paid. Spoiler: we don’t solve this issue.

Thanks for listening.

Today on the program Captain America: Winter Soldier the epic story written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Steve Epting.

The story arc consists of a complicated plot led by a Russian oligarch, armed with a mystical cosmic weapon, and aided by a mysterious assassin – who might possibly be Captain America’s dearest friend. Spoilers: it is.

Brubaker’s epic run on Captain America redefined the character for the 21st Century. And the Winter Soldier arc in particular set the stage for a new direction for Steve Rogers, a path that he is still on, while at the same time introducing an old character that laid the groundwork for how old concepts can be revived and made new again.

Also, Brian tries to convince Paul why he should be watching Superman & Lois on the CW.

Today on the program we discuss Black Hammer: Secret Origins the introductory collection of the ongoing series from Dark Horse that is some of the best comics being produced today. Beautifully written by Jeff Lemire and drawn magnificently by Dean Ormston this is a loving homage to Golden Age comics and a deconstruction of the superhero story while at the same time being a damned entertaining comic book.

And unfortunately, we discuss the Joss Whedon debacle. Man, what a disappointment. Note: that is an understatement. Warning: we use bad language when discussing this.

On a better note, we also talk about WandaVision which is a good thing that makes us happy.

Today on the program we discuss the 1985 12-issue mini-series The Vision and the Scarlet Witch.  Written by Steve Englehart with art by Richard Howell the series sees the titular characters resign from the Avengers to settle down and have a normal domestic life in New Jersey. Well, as normal as a synthoid man and a mutant witch can hope to achieve that is. This is the one where Wanda becomes pregnant…somehow. Magic we assume. This is a situation that will in no way cause any problems or have any ramifications on the Marvel universe in the future. Anyway, this is a very 80s comic with 80s sensibilities, so we have fun with that.

Also, we talk about the first two episodes of the WandaVision series on DisneyPlus. Spoilers: we think it’s pretty good.

Today on the program we discuss the 1989/1990 four-issue mini-series, The Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman with art by John Bolton, Scott Hampton, Charles Vess, and Paul Johnson. This is a project that started as simply a travelogue of magical characters throughout the DC universe, nothing more, nothing less. But Neil Gaiman took that assignment and, in typical Gaiman style, put his own spin on things transforming what was essentially a way to keep IPs from going out of copyright into a little mini-masterpiece.

He introduces Timothy Hunter, a tweleve-year-old boy that in no way resembles Harry Potter, as he takes a Dantesque journey through the past, the present, the other, and the future to explore the magical world and find his place within it.  With all his usual flair and poetic storytelling, aided by the unique and beautiful art styles of his collaborators, Gaiman weaves a wonderous and frightening tale that rises far, far above the assignment given to him.

We have a lot to say about this one.

No opening discussion this time because the main topic runs long. But this will be released as a bonus episode at a later date.

Today on the program we discuss the 1993 on-shot Aliens: Salvation by Dave Gibbons with art by Mike Mignola. In the long, long history of the Alien franchise, Salvation is lauded as not only one of the great comics but as one of the great stories. One that is able to convey the innate horror of the Xenomorph and the political machinations behind the scenes, while at the same time telling a personal character, driven tale. Horror and faith collide in this classic story with an ambiguous lead character and fantastic art. Also, Brian and Paul get a little deep trying to figure out what a grey area is.

In addition, we chat about DC’s Future State, what’s happening in Daredevil, and legacy characters in general. Do we ramble a bit? Of course we do.

Today on the program we discuss Hate. Peter Bagge’s early 90s independent comic featuring the trial and tribulations of Buddy Bradly. Please note: the themes and content of this comic are for mature audiences. While we are going to attempt to keep it clean there are subjects and situations that might not be suitable for all audiences. So fair warning to all – it might get rough.

This is an unflinching look at GenX life pre-grunge and starring people that you probably don’t want to know. Still, it is an important and influential comic that has the power to make you laugh and repel you at the same time. A fine line to walk for sure.

Also, talk about the second wave of firings at DC that has caused some to speculate on the direction of the company. And so, not to be left out, we speculate as well.

A special Halloween edition!

Today on the program Batman: The Long Halloween – the classic story written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale.

There have been many iconic and influential stories in the history of Batman. It seems that every decade we get a new definitive take on the Dark Knight. And in the 1990s that definitive take was The Long Halloween.

The Long Halloween is a 13 issue limited series published between 1996 and 1997. It follows close on the heels of Batman: Year One and is set in the early career of the Caped Crusader as he attempts to track down a serial killer called simply “Holiday” who kills once a month and only on a holiday.

This is a classic and influential story that was acclaimed upon its release and continues to influence the Batman mythos right up until today. But that doesn’t stop Brian and Paul from having a few critical things to say about it, while at the same time acknowledging why it’s great.

Also, we we give our recommendations for horror comics you should be reading, including: Hellblazer, EC Comics (in general), Horror Manga (in general) Junji Ito and Hideshi Hino (specifically), Red Mother, Something Is Killing the Children, and Gideon Falls.

Today on the program we will be discussing the 2008 four issue Wonder Woman arc – The Circle. Written by Gail Simone with art by Terry and Rachel Dodson.

In 2008, coming off her acclaimed run on Birds of Prey, Gail Simone was given the chance to write for Wonder Woman – a character she admitted she had a great admiration and affection for and a desire to do right by. The result was The Circle. The opening arc in what would be a fantastic run and a modernization of a classic character.

With The Circle Wonder Woman saw a new beginning, while at the same time embracing and re-imagining the past. Combined with the stunning art of Terry and Rachel Dodson, Gail Simone created the template for Wonder Woman that all creators who would come after would follow.

Also, we ramble quite a bit about movies and the lack there of.

“Archie’s spirit is remains simple and sincere.
And that’s just kinda nice.”

Archie Comics is a mainstay of the comic book industry. It’s been plugging away for decades telling simple stories of the joys of youth and the teenage experience through a colorful cast of characters that have become infused into the cultural landscape.

The stories we will be discussing today are from the Silver Age – and they are a travelogue of the fads and fashions of that time – from the swinging mods and rockers of the 60s to the groovy hippies and disco dancers of the 70s. And it tackles hard hitting topics like: how to be a beatnik, the proper way to protest, and probably most important of all – what’s the deal with hot pants?

Also, we talk about Mark Waid returning to DC Comics and speculate on what Brian Michael Bendis will be doing in the future. And we find out Brian does not like Hamilton – which is just wrong.

On this episode we discuss the first volume of Kurt Busiek‘s magnum opus – Astro City: Life in the Big City. In these six issues we get to know the titular city, it’s super powered inhabitants, and the regular folk who have to deal with the day-to-day life of living with super villain shenanigans.  With beautiful art by Brent Anderson and covers by the great Alex Ross, we are invited to get to know the people and the places that make up the bright, hopeful world of Astro City.

Also, we talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of recent DC Comics news. From the firings to the anticipation of DC Fandome (this was recorded just before it started).

So join us for a rollicking conversation about a great, great comic.

This is just a quick news episode to give everyone an update on what has been happening with the show. We haven’t released episodes in a while and that is going to change real soon – next week in fact. But in the meantime we put together a couple quick outtakes from previous episodes that got cut for time and just didn’t fit into the flow of the episode.

The first is out thoughts on the passing of Fred Willard that happened a couple hours before we started recording and the second is our thoughts – well Brian’s actually – on the firing of Dan Didio earlier in the year.

Also, we still want you recommendations for episodes!! So if you’d like Brian and I to talk about a particular series of character let us know and we will attempt to sound interesting as we discuss it.  Let us know on Titter: @CollectedEdPod

Thanks everyone for your patience and we’ll be back next week with Astro City volume 1: Life in the Big City.

Denny O’Neil passed away recently at the age of 81. His contributions to comics are immense – and that is not an understatement. Denny O’Neil started writing for comics in the 1960s and continued working for Marvel and DC among others on through the 1990s and eventually became an editor on till his retirement. Known for his impressive and innovative run on Batman, the iconic storylines in Green lantern/Green Arrow, and so much more – not to mention the name Optimus Prime – Denny O’Neil was one of the most innovative and important writers in the history of comics, and was one of the architects of how the industry progressed and developed and matured. His voice will be missed.

On this short episodes Brian and Paul share their memories and thoughts on this giant of the comics industry.

In a statement from DC”:

“After 25 years DC and Diamond Comic Distributors and are ending their long-standing relationship. Moving forward, comic book retailers can obtain their DC books from Penguin Random House, or their books and periodicals through Lunar or UCS comic book distributors.”

This is a incredibly complex and nuanced subject and Brian and I attempt to get to the bottom of it with a) very little information and b) a reluctance to actually take a side. So you know, a typical conversation for us.

This will be the first of several Bonus episodes to help bridge the gap between main episodes. Due to events happening in the world Brian and I have had our schedules shaken up a bit and because of that our free time does not quite sync up the way it used to and that has led to long gaps between episodes. We are very aware of this so in order to fill in those gaps we decided to do shorter bonus content like this just so there is some kind of content coming out – and not to mention we just like to chat from time to time. And I hope this is somewhat entertaining.

Today on the program: Squadron Supreme, the 1985 12-issue limited series by Mark Grunewald, with art by Bob Hall and Paul Ryan.

The Squadron Supreme is of course the group of characters created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema as a pastiche of the Justice League. But in this ground breaking series Grunewald – aided by the art of Bob Hall and Paul Ryan – began the exploration into the implications of how super heroes could affect personal freedom and free will a full year before such titles as Dark Knight Returns and Watchman would put a gritty spin on these ideas. And you can bet a young Mark Waid was already taking notes.

Also on the program Paul and Brian discuss some of the back tiles they’ve been reading during lockdown.

So join us as we discuss the Justice League homage that is the Squadron Supreme.

Today on the program we will be discussing Doom Patrol: The Painting That Ate Paris written by Grant Morrison with art by Richard Case. This is our second listener request, this one was requested by Herman Louw of the Into the Weird and Longbox of Darkness podcasts – go listen to them they are wonderful. It’s been a while since the request was made so I hope this lives up to expectations.

This is the second volume in the acclaimed and influential and bonkers run of grant Morrison and we will be getting into all kinds of subjects like literary references, art theory, and philosophy. All the while gushing over the psychedelic fever dream of absurdity that is Doom Patrol.

Also, we discuss the possible ramifications to the comic book world in the wake of the lockdowns as well as the recent news BOOM! has signed a deal with Netflix. And a cat gets involved at some point.

So join us as we discuss the glorious insanity that is the mind of Grant Morrison!

This is 70s comics at its crazy, goofy best. Plus there’s a smattering of political and social commentary for good measure. Written by written by Roy Thomas, with art by Sal and John Buscema along with Neal Adams (how’s that for a creative team?) the story was originally published in Marvel Comics comics and includes Avengers  issues #89 thru 97. Just so much to talk about from androids in love, to cows secretly being aliens, a thinly veiled McCarthy stand-in, mandroids, and so much more!

Also, Brian is going through the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time (how did it take him so long to get around to these movies? Its a mystery) so we discuss his progress so far and initial thoughts.

Today on the program we will be discussing Doctor Aphra Volume one – by Kieron Gillen with art by Kev Walker.

Dr. Aphra was the breakout character from the original Darth Vader run and became so popular a spinoff series was created. Doctor Aphra is an archeologist/adventurer – much like Indiana Jones, if Indiana Jones was morally fluid and ethically challenged – and is one of the most interesting and dynamic characters to come out of the new Disney/Marvel era of Star Wars. Plus she travels with murder droids and a Wookie bounty hunter  so wacky highjinx will always occur.

In addition, since this is a Star Wars centric episode, Brian and Paul also discuss the most recent entries into the Star Wars cinematic/televisual worlds – The Rise of Skywalker and The Mandalorian. Not exactly timely but what are you gonna do?

So join us for a rousing discussion of all things Star Wars!

It can be problematic at times and cause some conflicting views. But there is lies the fun.

Today on the program we discuss the 1978 Judge Dredd story-arc The Cursed Earth originally published in 2000AD (the magazine not the year).  Loosely based on Roger Zelazny’s novel Damnation Alley the story finds out titular anti-hero traveling across a nuclear fallout wasteland on a mission to save the citizens of Mega City 2 from plague. Along the way he meets mutants, outlaws, aliens, dinosaurs, Ronald MacDonald and living product mascots. And he deals with them in the way only a semi-fascistic one-man judge, jury and executioner can.

Also, we talk about the launch of Disney Plus and go a little overboard on the “Han Shot First” controversy. Yes, we have opinions on Star Wars, who would have thought?

So join us for a rousing discussion on post-apocalyptic wastelands and the people who live there. You’ll be glad you did.

Today on the program we talk horror comics from the 1970s! Specifically the Living Mummy.

In the 1950s the Comic Book Code all but killed the horror comic. But in the 1970s restrictions were eased a bit allowing horror to come back to comics – Marvel was quick to capitalize on this and rushed into publication titles such as: Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf by Night, Monster of Frankenstein and of course – The Living Mummy.

The Living Mummy first appeared in Supernatural Thrillers #5 but proved to be so popular that the character was brought back in issue #7 and stayed as the lead story in the book until its cancellation after issue #15.

Created by Steve Gerber and written at first by him and then later Tony Isabella, with suitably creepy art by Val Mayerik – the Living Mummy is an interesting and compelling glimpse into an industry that was just coming out of its own creative entombment and lumbering toward an unknown, uncertain future.

Also on the program we talk – well actually Paul talks about – the new character of Man-Slaughter, a Weapon X version of Man-Thing. Its…well its a thing for sure. We also briefly talk about the new X-Man run by Johnathan Hickman and if there is ever a good jumping on point in comics.

Listen in for a spooktactular Halloween episode! Actually its just a regular episode with a different intro – but its still good.

We’ve done 50 of these bad boys. There should be fireworks and John Phillip Sousa music or something.

I want to thank our listeners, those that have been with us from the start and new listeners just joining us – it is so great to have you all here and giving us feedback and encouragement. It’s always amazing to me that there are actually listeners. Because these are the conversations that you and I would have anyway. That’s how this started everyone. Brian and I would get on the phone and discuss and debate comic books or a movie or a book for an hour or so. And I thought wow, we should just record this and see if anyone comes around to listen – and you did! So thank you all for that and we do really appreciate you for being here.

And for this momentous occasion we will be discussing Alan Moore’s seminal run on Swamp Thing – specifically the Arc “Murder of Crows” that covers issues 43 thru 50 – serial killers, Satanists, ghosts and hallucinations! What more could you ask for?

Also we talk about DC’s new plan for legacy characters and the inevitable crisis that will happen because of it.

And thanks again for joining us on long journey of rambling conversations about our favorite medium. We’ve had a lot of fun so far and look forward to a least another 50 episodes.

But with some patience, diligence and a few late nights we were able to recover the files. So I hope its worth it.

On the program we will be discussing Moon Knight: From the Dead the 2014 6 issue arc written by Warren Ellis with art by Declan Shalvey and colored magnificently by Jordie Bellaire. This is a new beginning of sorts for the character of Moon Knight And Warren Ellis was able to consolidate all of Moon Knight’s varied and – let’s face it – confusing history into a compelling and intriguing narrative. Filled with beautiful, if disturbing, art this comic is a master class in sequential art. It also creates a template of sorts for the character going forward in comic and now TV.

Also we talk about the strange kerfuffle going on with the rights of Youngblood and Rob Liefield‘s very public breakdown.

In addition we are playing a song The Box based on Moon Knight by the band Deleter off their new EP The Othervoid. If you like the song consider buying it and supporting independent music. You will be glad you did! Do it here: BANDCAMP

It is filled with intricate world-building, complex characters and stunning art that is some of the best being produced in comics today.

It is set in a world of magic and war, populated by humans, immortal beings, hybrid creatures, and many tailed scholarly cats – Montress follows the story of Maika Halfwolf, a teenage Arcanic girl that passes for human but also shares a psychic connection with an ancient demon as she sets off on adventure to find her true origins and her mother’s possibly nefarious motivations, as she comes to grips with the darkness inside her. All the while she is relentlessly pursued by the Cumaea, an order of sorceresses who consume Arcanics’ essence to fuel their power.

Just being and intricate and entertaining story is remarkable enough but what makes Monstress stand out from typical fantasy fare is the fact that it is populated almost entirely by women.  Women are the heroes, women are the villains, women are the bystanders and common folk, Women are…everything really. It is a truly groundbreaking work.

In addition we talk about our favorite fantasy comics and digress (shocker!) into other topics including how genres are labeled.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

This is something we try not to do but with this comic it was…it keeping with what was being discussed. In addition we also talk about some pretty sensitive subjects that might be disturbing to some so if you don’t want to hear that sort of thing free to skip this one. Totally understand. But if you’re cool with it give a listen and this one might be a little controversial – let us know what you think.

So in the introduction we always say famous and infamous – I think we finally hit upon infamous.

Today on the program we discuss The Boys. The Wildstorm then Dynamite series written by Garth Ennis at his most juvenile. It is Ennis’ attempt at superhero satire filled with sex and curse words. Its edgy in the way a 15 year old thinks edgy should be. (am I giving away what we think about this series?) It also has great art by Darick Robertson doing his best with the material given to him so there’s that.

In addition we discuss the sad news of the folding of Mad Magazine. This was a mainstay in generations of children and a fine purveyor of satire and parody. It will be missed. Also, we will talk about Jeff Lemire‘s two new upcoming books: Joker: Killer Smile by Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino and The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage with Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz. If you look at those collaborators you know that is noting else the art is going to be fabulous.

The discussion will cover book one that consists of two story-lines “Ante Up” and “Double Down” in which we get to know the characters, we learn of their situation and a little of how and why they have been put on a kill list for what they’ve seen. And we learn the lengths they will go to uncover the conspiracy surrounding that situation and who the mysterious figure of Max that is pulling the strings. Plus tons of bad-ass heist action.

Also on the program we discuss the “pop-up line” (whatever that means) of limited series horror comics called Hill House Comics. This will be part of the Black Label imprint that will apparently taking the place of Vertigo. Hill probably best known for Locke and Key – although he’s pretty prolific and totally the son of Stephen King and everyone knows that – and will be writing two titles and a mini-series along side three other titles announced for the line.

Also, side note if you go to our website collectededitionpodcast.com you will find a brand new “resources” page in which we will be posting the collected editions we are reading from on every episode with links to Amazon if you would like to purchase it (or anything else for that matter). If you follow that link and buy it there is no additional cost to you but we get a kickback of a few cents or something that goes toward the upkeep of the show – hosting costs and whatnot. Both are at the top of their game here – the writing is fantastic and the art is some of the best Zeck has ever produced. this is dark, disturbing, complex and thrilling – it is a prime example of what makes comics so appealing as a medium and shows just why it can do things and tell stories in ways no other medium can. This is a good story.

Also on the program we discuss the ending of Vertigo –  the adult-oriented DC imprint that was highly influential and spawned so many classic series that would be too numerous to mention here. Vertigo’s demise is a big loss for comics and Brian and I spend some time reminiscing about Vertigo’s importance and lamenting it’s end.

I mean Captain America is turned into a werewolf in the middle of a town of werewolves  what more needs to be said? Do you need to know that Wolverine is there? Or Doctor Druid? Cable? Well they are and more. It’s also a 90s comic drawn by Rik Levins so get ready for straps around the leg, shoulder pads, bondage gear and pouches! It is weird, wonderful and fun.

Also on the program we discuss Batman related news with the firing of Tom King and the casting of Robert Patterson. Paul also goes off on a bit of a tangent about Twilight – and not in the way you’d think.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

Today on the program – a classic story by a legendary creator. We’ll be talking about DC: the New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke. This is a nostalgic look at the Gold and Silver Ages of comics weaving the classic DC characters into history and telling a tale that is both a love letter to the 1950s and a critical look at it’s faults. All with Darwyn Cooke’s unique style that has a very old-timey/golden age feel and style but at the same time it is very modern. And if you need a prime example of why comics is a unique and different medium look no further than The New Frontier. DC: the New Frontier is a combination of art, illustration, prose, pulp and cinema – all combined in a way that produce something that no other medium can produce.

Also on the show we discuss the latest cash grab – sorry, I mean new and interesting project Marvel #1000. This will be a one-shot coming in august to celebrate the publisher’s 80-year history which kicked off with 1939’s Marvel Comics #1. Well…that is to say it would be the 1000th issues had the comic continued without interruption – which of course it didn’t. And I should say by “discussion” I really mean I sit then quietly while Brian shares his thoughts and feelings.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

Today on the program we are discussing Lone Wolf & Cub: The Assassin’s Road, the Dark Horse collected edition of the classic Manga by legendary creators Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. It can not be understated the importance and the influence of this comic on the medium of comics, but also on anime, movies, TV and basically the arts in general. Hoping we do it justice.

We also talk about the passing of Kazuo Koike and just how much his work has impacted the comics world.

Also on the program we discuss some of the comics to be announced at Star Wars Celebration that happened in Chicago recently and how Brian did not attend for some reason.

Today on the program we are discussing Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil – the 2007 4 issue reinterpretation of Captain Marvel by Jeff Smith of Bone fame. This is a intriguing and different take on the origin story of Shazam (or Captain Marvel) as imagined by Jeff Smith. Using his unique style Smith hits all the usual story beats you’d expect in a Shazam story but with a few different twists and a bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure. It’s everything you expect just not in the way you expect it.

Also on the program we discuss the new logo for Detective Comics that will appear on that comic’s 1001th issue. One of us likes it, one does not really care…which is which? Find out!

In addition we talk about the graphic novel adaptation of Pete Townsend’s grandiose project Lifehouse will be published by Heavy metal magazine in 2020. If you don’t know about Lifehouse – it’s a really strange thing that probably works really well if you’re on mind altering substances and one of us is really excited and one is not…which is which? Find out!

And finally we also discuss the rather controversial ideas of Dave Sim of Cerebus fame and should we admire the art and not the artist and is that even possible?

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

In this run Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel is freed from the confines of New York City and finds her stories in a more cosmic arena. She helps intergalactic refugees, thwarts space crime syndicate, disrupts an arranged alien marriage in rhyme, learns that her cat is an interdimensional being with pockets of reality inside it, and discovers her ship has a sarcasm detector.

Told on an epic scale in intimate ways this run of Captain Marvel re-defined who the character was and will become. It’s quite good actually.

In addition we also discuss the rehiring of James Gunn by Disney, Ezra Miller getting fed up and just hiring Grant Morrison to write the dang Flash movie and Paul takes a few minutes to give a brief (and more than likely inaccurate) history of Captain Marvel in Marvel comics.

In addition we want to send our sympathies and condolences to the people of New Zealand and to those who lost loved ones in this reprehensible act of violence and hatred. We love you and stand with you.

Its Justice League International!

Today on the program we are discussing the fabulous, wonderful, glorious Justice League International written by Keith Giffen and J. M. DeMatteis, with outstanding art by Kevin Maguire. Spoilers: we like this one. A lot. This of course is 1980s classic run of the Justice League filled with D-listers and humor and a surprising amount of really serious themes underpinning the comedy. So be prepared to listen to two men gush about such illustrious characters as Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle, Mr. Miracle, Booster Gold, Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, and some unknown dude named…Batman (a dude in a bat suit? That’s weird.). This is a fun one people.

In addition we also discuss the shakeups at DC Comics and the possibility of the downsizing of monthly issues. But as we do we wander off into different areas and talk about such deep introspective issues like…the weather. So that’s fun. We also give a shout out to some of our favorite podcasts and podcasters, which is long overdue.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

In 1998 when writer Christopher Priest reintroduced the hero as part of the slightly more adult “Marvel Knights” line, in this critically acclaimed series that ran until 2003. The stories we will be discussing today are half political thriller, half crime drama and half buddy comedy. I know that’s a lot of halves – but there’s a lot going on here.

Together with art by Mark Texeira and Vince Evans, Priest reinvented Black Panther. He gave the character an edge and added political and social satire to his story while deftly weaving decades old story-lines flawlessly into the narrative. He makes T’Challa a fully rounded and complex character torn between his obligations as a Head of State, a defender of the people, a team member and a friend.

This run changed the way we think of Black Panther. It added political intrigue to the already established Afro-futurism of Wakanda, it changed the way his supporting characters were portrayed and perceived and added new elements – like the Dora Milaje –  that have become staples in the series ever since.

In addition we also discuss why comics are good. Its an impromptu discussion as we didn’t have a topic chosen but it was actually a lot of fun, possibly informative, hopefully entertaining. You’ll have to tell us in the comments.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

After an extended hiatus that was exacerbated by some logistical issues Brian and Paul have returned for a lively discussion on Sandman Mystery Theater. Specifically the story arcs Dr. Death & Night of the Butcher, written by Matt Wagner & Steven Seagle with art by Vince Locke and Guy Davis. This was a Vertigo series from the 90s that attempted to capitalize on the popularity on Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series. It revives the original Golden Age Sandman character but and plays heavily on the 30s and 40s noir detective aesthetic and leaning heavily on the pulp stories of that era;  while at the same time giving the stories a distinctively 90s feel and tone.

In addition we talk briefly about a (possibly disturbing) trend in comics today – the revival of the 90s! or at least or at least a 90s aesthetic that is beginning to reemerge in comics recently. Brian and Paul hve feeling on this.

Also, we discuss the upcoming premire of the SyFy series Deadly Class based on the based on the acclaimed comic by Rick Remender.

On this episode we discuss two holiday issues:

Batman Adventures: Holiday Special
The 1994 collection of five holiday stories based on the classic Batman Animated Series. Written by Paul Dini and illustrated by several artists it is a collection of short vignettes that range from slapstick to tender. It also features the story The Harley and the Ivy that has become a perennial favorite and was given its own episode in the animated series because of it’s popularity.

and

Power-Man & Iron Fist: Sweet Christmas
This is the first annual from the David F. Walker run of Power-Man & Iron Fist and drawn by Scott Hepburn. This was from the 2016 run that brought the two characters back together in a run that focused on the comradery of the two. It highlighted their silliness and emphasized the fun inherent in the pairing. This story takes place on Christmas eve and features Luke cage, Danny rand, Jessica Draw and the Son of Satan battling Krampus and demon spawn Pokemon toys with the aid of Santa Claus. No, seriously. It is a lot of fun.

In addition we give our top picks for the best of 2018 comics. We agreed to make a list of five comics so of course Brian mad a list of seven. We also talk about honorable mentions, Brian has a few words on his least favorite comic of the year, and I give my pick for the most promising comic of 2019.

On this episode we discuss the 1970s darker take on AquamanThe Death of a Prince. This was an attempt to make the character more mature and to deal with more adult themes. It deals with family matters,  Atlantian politics, as well as relentless attacks and dubious plots from the likes of Black Manta, Ocean Master, and (cough) the Fisherman. All this and leads ultimately to, as the title suggests, the death of his child.

Death of a Prince is simultaneously lighthearted and dark. It attempts to deal with the themes of loyalty and betrayal, duty and responsibility, and grief in the aftermath of tragedy – albeit in a very 70s kind of way.

Also, we in lieu of having an actual topic to discuss we sort of stumble our way through roughly five minutes of stream of consciousness that goes from bad Christmas songs to our opinions on the CW Flarrowverse. Meh, we had fun.

This is a series that is visually stunning and narratively…interesting. Look, Steranko was doing some truly innovative and unique work that feels really modern, at the same time there is some – let’s say stumbles – that are very much of its time. We discuss all of this and I tell a personal story of seeing Steranko live. He was…difficult to listen to.

Also, we talk about the passing of Stan Lee and give our thoughts and feeling on this icon of the comic industry. He will be missed.

A Podcast!

Yes, we will be discussing the 2016 series The Vision written by Tom King with art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta. This is the 2016 12 issue solo run for the character of the Vision that has been acclaimed by some as a modern classic. It is a well-crafted meticulously told story that is funny, and sad, and horrific, and triumphant. But most of all it is beautiful in a way that only ordinary life can be. There are a lot of deep ideas here folks and we attempt to make sense of it as best we can.

In addition to this we talk about the Elseworlds crossover event in the Arrowverse. Or at least we attempt to…fact is we stray off topic quite a bit and then valiantly attempt to return to it but inevitable stray off course again. And a couple of times we bring up Manimal for some unknown reason. Look, its weird okay.  But fun maybe? Listen and find out.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

In addition to this we talk about the biggest thing in comics, something that keeps popping up, a bone of contention, a hard topic to discuss…yes, it’s Batman’s penis. And we are very mature about the whole thing. On a more somber note we also discuss the passing of Norm Breyfogle, the iconic Batman artist the left us far too young.

On this episode we on the program we will be talking about a grim and gritty take on Green Arrow long before the CW was ever even a concept let alone a the exclusive hub for DC programming (for now). Yes, it’s  it’s Mike Grell’s 1987 mini-series The Longbow Hunters. We talk about this highly influential comic that it can be argued – and spoilers, we do argue – that this was the first real grim-dark take on an in continuity character to go mainstream as well as an early example of the darker tone in comics that would come to dominate the late 80s and 90s. Grell takes Green Arrow to street level perspective. He adds harsh, sometimes brutal violence to the story that is not only visceral but has real consequences. The Longbow Hunters started a trend in comic book storytelling that for good or ill is still with us to this day.

In addition to this we go into a rambling and directionless conversation about famous marriages in comic books. This was meant to be a tie-in to the announcement that Ben Grim will finally marry Alicia Masters – but it soon devolves into a “Chris Farley” topic in which two grown men say “do you remember that one” for about 20 minutes. Pro tip: plan your topics ahead of time rather than a few seconds before recording so that you sound sort of interesting. Well, we had fun. Hope that comes through.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

This collection encompasses a lot of material alternating between single page “gag” cartoons and longer adventure style stories. For our purposes we focus primarily on the first story that the collection takes its name from (sort of) The Seven Cities of Cibola. This particular story, while being written for children, has had significant influence on later creators. Famously Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for instance have cited it for being an inspiration for Raiders of the Lost Arc. So, that’s not too shabby. Also, the art and style of Carl Barks is unparalleled in the medium – he’s really good. So join two grown men as we talk lovingly about a children’s book from the 1950s – its fun!

We also talk about Comicsgate because we love to polarize our audience. Also because diversity is good and make comics better (spoiler I guess as to our opinion?) In addition we discuss the new creative team on Conan the Barbarian’s return to Marvel and the announcement that Grant Morrison will be taking on The Green Lantern. Sadly its Hal Jordan – but if anyone can make that character interesting it should be Grant Morrison.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

This edition covers issues 17 thru 31 of Power Man and was written and drawn by…just so many people. Some of the more prominent are: Len Wein, Tony Isabella, Don McGregor, George Tuska, Ron Wilson, George Pérez, and several others. This is a transitional period for Luke Cage as a charterer as writers and artists try to find out what and who the character is. Along the way there are some wonderful moments and a few creditworthy ones as well. But it is experimental and modern and full of 70s goofiness that makes Marvel at this time a joy to read.

In addition we talk about the firing of James Gunn, so the won’t be too controversial or polarizing or anything. Also we talk about the new Shazam! trailer and Brian weighs in on his feeling about Batman #50.

Today on the program we will be discussing the  The Legion of Superheroes, Archives Vol. 1, the collection of Silver Age wackiness and weirdness that is most definitely a product of a bygone era.  It features boys and girls, lads and gals from the future with one power, one only! As well as Superboy, Supergirl and Superman at really random periods in their timelines because time is a mystery and time travel has no rules. On the program you will hear about such classic characters as Bouncing Boy, Matter Eating Lad and Shrinking Violet…and you will get to hear Brian say the immortal words:  “I can’t get enough of disembodied brains.” So that’s a treat!

Also on the program we talk about the recent shakeups at DC and figure out what it all means and what the ramifications are to those changes. Spoilers: we don’t actually do that. Still we talk about it in our unique rambling way, again…its a treat.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

Gail Simone’s writing makes this by taking a dark and often violent premise and elevates it by adding humor and heart. This is a very entertaining comic that proves that bad guys can be great. Even if they are horrible while doing it.

In addition to this we also talk about the new streaming service from DC (in association with Warner Bros.) called, appropriately enough, DC Universe.

This will feature all the DC properties including the animated stuff, the CW shows (maybe, that was unclear), Batman 66 and wonder woman retro series as well as some original series including Swamp Thing – which we are particularly excited for – and this leads to a brief discussion about streaming services in general.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

This is of course a blatant ploy on my part to tie into the upcoming release of The Avengers Infinity War that will draw heavily from this story (by all accounts, I haven’t actually seen it yet as it hasn’t been released.)

This is one of those big, bold, over-the-top kind of comics that are just so much fun to read and talk about.

The Infinity Gauntlet was the 1991 main event, a six issue limited series that revolves around Thanos’ attempts to win the affection of Mistress Death, including killing half the population of the Universe with a snap of his fingers. You know, like you do when you got the hots for a girl. (wait what?) The Infinity Gauntlet is a sweeping, complex cosmic drama with philosophical overtones that continues to be referenced and influential in stories right up to today…and for good or ill, it set the stage for company crossovers for decades to come.

In addition to this we also talk about Amazon reportedly developing an adaptation of Johnathan Hickman’s comics East of West and Transhuman. Both of which to be produced by Robert Kirkman of Walking Dead fame.  And the rumor that Grant Morrison taking over as writer for Green Lantern. A comic whose premise is that emotion and thought can be willed into existence using multi-colored rings? Seems like something Morrison might be able to do something with that.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

So in addition to talking about sprawling story line and multitude of characters we also touch on the importance of indie/alternate/underground comics and why you should seek them out and support them.

In addition to this we also briefly discuss the return of the Fantastic Four to marvel’s lineup with an ongoing comic written by Dan Slott and art by Sara Pichelli. Warning: puns abound.

It can not be overstated how influential this work has been and continues to be not only in comics but in the wold of entertainment in general. It is philosophically uplifting, socially relevant, and of course probably the most entertaining three panel storytelling (if not storytelling overall) ever created.

That’s right, on the program we will be discussing – as many probably guessed – the classic 1996 collection by Jim DavisGarfield: Tons of Fun. This is of course the 29th collection of the opus that is Garfield and one of the best in our mind.

And in deference to the subject matter we are not going to talk about any other topics as we feel it would take away from the dignity of this collection and its historical importance.

In the 1980s under writer Chris Claremont the X-Men became the most popular title of its day, not only outselling every most other titles at Marvel but its rival DC as well.  So unsurprisingly Marvel decided to do a spin-off series starting a trend that would in no way spiral out of control in the future. The new title was called the New Mutants and would focus on a team of mutants that were younger and the stories would deal with them coming to terms with their own powers and dealing with the trials of growing up as well. The series was very hit or miss until artist Bill Sienkiewicz came on board with a neat little story arc called The Demon Bear Saga. This story arc spans only three issues (with a fourth issue acting as a coda) and it has become the seminal arc in the title’s history and and probably the one most remembered by the general reading public today. And the art is brilliant.

Also on the program we discuss – or attempt to discuss – the leaked set photos of Shazam‘s costume. The idea was to talk about comic book accurate costumes in live action and debate if they work at all and if they do which ones? But right off the bat we stray into Captain Marvel‘s publishing history, Deadpool, and various other subjects that have nothing to do with the actual topic. It is a truly stunning display of going off the rails – but in a good way maybe? You’ll have to let us know.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

Metatextual, metaphysical, I never meta man I didn’t like, etc. Yes, we are talking about the famous and infamous (this time the story falls into both categories) run of Animal Man by Grant Morrison with art by Chas Truag and Doug Hazelwood. This is one of those runs in comics that is so different, so influential, and so good that it is really hard to put into words how to describe it. But that does not stop us from trying. It is the story of a fictional character aware of the fact that he is a fictional character and deals with the philosophical ramifications that comes along with that realization. Also there is the tragic loss of a cat. It all makes for a lively and fun discussion.

“Maybe, for once, we can try to be kind.”
– the character of Grant Morrison as written by Grant Morrison

Also on the program we discuss the announcement of the Sandman Universe, the spin-off titles from the much beloved series by Neil Gaiman, and we try to decide if this throwback to 90s nostalgia is actually something that needs to be – or all we all living in a dream? In addition we also discuss the announcement that Ta-Nehisi Coates will be writing Captain America and if a writer of his caliber can make Captain America great again.

This could involve alternate realities, timelines, or time periods. In this way a character could be explored in radically different ways allowing the writer and artist to experiment and innovate on that character and his or her setting. In this story we find Bat-Man (with a hyphen) and his alter ego Bruce Wayne living in 1889 the height of the Victorian age on the hunt for the infamous Jack the Ripper. Batman as a concept works surprisingly well in 1889. Go figure.

Also on the program we discuss the possible Lobo film adaptation directed by none other than Michael Bay – so if you thought Lobo had very little substance to begin with just wait till Bay gets his hands on him. Also, we discuss the possibility of Joaquin Phoenix playing the Joker in the mythical Martin Scorsese produced Joker origin movie where we ask the inevitable question: Why? Just…why?

On this episode we discuss Daredevil: Born Again the classic story written by Frank Miller with art by David Mazzucchelli. This is a work that has inspired many and is seen as a seminal work for both Miller and David Mazzucchelli. It was very influential in its day and is still influential as it will be the basis for the upcoming season three of the Netflix Daredevil series.  All that being said Brian and I have some differing opinions on the story and a lively discussion arises. So check that out.

Also on the program we discuss the one bit of news that will no doubt be the biggest story in 2018…the return of Superman’s red undies. (Sorry, trunks) We also discuss the announcement of a solo Black Widow film and the return of Gail Simone to marvel to write an ongoing Domino series. We also stray off topic from time to time.

On this episode we discuss Heir to the Empire the 1996 adaptation of the Star Wars novel by Timothy Zhan and the start of the celebrated Thrawn trilogy. Originally published by Dark Horse Comics it was scripted by Mike Baron with art by Olivier Vatine and Fred Blanchard. This is a “legends” story meaning its not in canon anymore but several elements including the character of Thrawn have made their way back into main current continuity.  And its a fun ride.

Also on the program we discuss the return of Conan (the barbarian not the O’Brian) to Marvel Comics the place where he called home from the early 70s to the mid-90s. And we also give our thoughts on the recent announcement by DC of John Ridley’s The Other History of the DC Universe. This will be a retelling of classic stories from the vantage point of marginalized and disenfranchised members of the DC family – an interesting opportunity to tell new angels on existing stories.

On this episode we discuss Phonogram written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Jamie McKelvie. This comic is a multi-layered musical extravaganza that focuses on BritPop, magic and the power of nostalgia. It proves to be an interesting discussion that brings up many diverse concepts and ideas.

Also, we typically talk about some comic news but today we deviate from that a little bit because as we record this Christmas is right around the corner and in addition to that Star Wars the Last Jedi has just been released in theaters so to celebrate that we have decided to talk about the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. Wow, its a thing to behold.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

You cannot speak about the character of Thor in Marvel comics without also mentioning in the same breath the name of Walt Simonson. He did not create this character but he took him to heights he had never reached before. This is really good.

On this episode we discuss, in honor of the greatest holiday invented by man, we discuss the classic 70s Marvel comic Tomb of Dracula. Volume 2 to be precise. This is written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by Gene Colan and is – depending on you level of nostalgia – either a wonderful work of chilling beauty or a long-winded bit of purple prose and flowery fluff. no matter which way your opinions fall there is no  doubt that it is interesting.

Also on the program we discuss the very real and deeply disturbing problem that is dividing the nation…the issue of how comic are numbered. With the release of Marvel Legacy and the return (for now) of the “original” numbering scheme how does one begin to organize their longboxes? It is a topic that needs an answer. Nay! it demands one. Yeah, so…we talk about it.

We are a little behind schedule this time around but that’s because Brian went off and decided to “have a life” and not record a podcast. The nerve of some people. Yes, its our first themed episode in anticipation of the upcoming release Blade Runner 2049 we have a Blade Runner-centric episode. Starting off the program we talk a bit about the original movie and the mistaken belief that Deckard is a replicant before diving into the 1982 official comic book adaptation of the movie written by  Archie Goodwin with art by Al Williamson. This Marvel “super special” ran for two issues and its quality was…questionable.

But in addition to that our main topic will be the 2009 adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel that the movie was based on: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? This is a 24 issues, incredibly faithful comic from BOOM! Studios with art by Tony Parker that was released in 2009.

Also on the program we talk briefly about the death of Len Wein and his legacy and impact on comics.

On this episode we discuss the iconic story arc The Judas Contract from Tales of the New Teen Titans. This is the beloved story written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Pérez. This really is an important run that has had an influence on modern comic storytelling and helped to usher in a new era of comics in general.

Also on the program we talk briefly about our childhood favorite characters and we reminisce with nostalgic glee on the joys of getting mail. There is a possibility we may be old.

Note on the production: this episode was fraught with problems in the recording with wifi failures, construction noises and dogs howling. There were multiple interruptions and it seemed as if fate was telling us that this didn’t want to get done. It was a Herculean effort to clean this up and get it presentable for release, so thank you listeners for you patience. It took a while but I just wanted this to be acceptable and pleasant to listen to. Again, thanks.

On this episode we discuss Godland Vol. 1: Hello Cosmic! the 2005 series by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli published by Image Comics.

In addition to that we also chat about our anticipation for the release of Wonder Woman and the upcoming revival of Mr. Miracle by Tom King. And we digress, lord how we digress. It turn out the stating on topic is a challenge that we are simply not up to – but to be fair there are a few interesting asides from time to time.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comics related material.
