Hello and welcome to the Collected Edition – a comic book podcast where we explore celebrated story-arcs from comics and creators throughout the entirety of history.
On this episode we on the program we will be talking about a grim and gritty take on Green Arrow long before the CW was ever even a concept let alone a the exclusive hub for DC programming (for now). Yes, it’s it’s Mike Grell’s 1987 mini-series The Longbow Hunters. We talk about this highly influential comic that it can be argued – and spoilers, we do argue – that this was the first real grim-dark take on an in continuity character to go mainstream as well as an early example of the darker tone in comics that would come to dominate the late 80s and 90s. Grell takes Green Arrow to street level perspective. He adds harsh, sometimes brutal violence to the story that is not only visceral but has real consequences. The Longbow Hunters started a trend in comic book storytelling that for good or ill is still with us to this day.
In addition to this we go into a rambling and directionless conversation about famous marriages in comic books. This was meant to be a tie-in to the announcement that Ben Grim will finally marry Alicia Masters – but it soon devolves into a “Chris Farley” topic in which two grown men say “do you remember that one” for about 20 minutes. Pro tip: plan your topics ahead of time rather than a few seconds before recording so that you sound sort of interesting. Well, we had fun. Hope that comes through.
So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.
